A progressive Afghan dance series designed to welcome dancers with different levels of experience. The evening is divided into two classes, allowing dancers to focus on building technique, explore choreography, or take both.

6:30–7:30 PM — Afghan Dance Technique
7:30–8:30 PM — Afghan Dance Choreography
August 26–October 7, 2026

Dancers can arrive as early as 6:15 PM to warm up and be ready to begin promptly at 6:30 PM.

Afghan Dance Technique Class

This 7-week series focuses on refined technique, musicality, and expressive artistry within the Afghan dance tradition. Through focused exploration of footwork, body positioning, turns, transitions, and movement quality, dancers will strengthen their technical foundation while developing a deeper connection to the music, culture, and storytelling within the dance.

Technique may be taken on its own and is designed to be an accessible entry point for dancers who are newer to Afghan dance, while still offering experienced dancers an opportunity to refine and deepen their technique.

Afghan Dance Choreography Series

Build on your Afghan dance technique through a complete choreography, including staging and performance preparation. This class deepens your understanding of movement vocabulary, musical interpretation, transitions, and expressive storytelling through a choreographic lens.

The Technique class is recommended for dancers who are newer to Afghan dance and provides the foundation for the choreography class.

Bio:⁠
Natalie has been dancing for more than 18 years, and has devoted her life to the study of dance from Tajikistan, Iran, & Uzbekistan. She has received grants & awards to study dance and conduct dance research in Uzbekistan & Tajikistan. Natalie is the Assistant Director of Ballet Afsaneh, Program director & teacher in the Afsaneh Dance Academy, and choreographer for Sorayya Dance Company out of UC Berkeley. Her hope is to share the beauty in these regions of the world through dance! ⁠
