Pre-concert, join the dancers of Ballet Afsaneh and Marin Symphony conductor Alasdair Neale for a lecture and short performance demonstrating the ancient Central Asian roots of The Rite of Spring. This ground breaking work is a ballet first performed by the Ballets Russes in Paris in May, 1913 under impresario Serge Diaghilev. Today, The Rite of Spring remains an unparalleled icon in music and dance history. Stravinsky’s driving rhythms, dissonance and polytonality —combined with Nijinsky’s radical choreography and set designer Nikolas Roerich’s fanciful depiction of pagan ritual—created a performance so shocking that the audience rioted at the premiere.
But where did Roerich--Stravinksy’s close collaborator and the pioneering visionary behind the ballet--get his inspiration? Where did those early, "pagan" dance forms and rituals originate?

Join Maestro Alisdair Neale and Ballet Afsaneh at 6:30 for the pre-concert presentation, then sit back with us and enjoy the concert, as Maestro Alasdair Neale conducts the Marin Symphony Orchestra in three great symphonic works:
    Roberto Sierra        Carnaval
Concerto for Flute & Harp in C Major
Igor Stravinsky       The Rite of Spring
